One of the things that the team looks forward to each busy tax season at WNDE is the firm’s Annual Pancake Breakfast.
In its 17th year, this is a much anticipated event on the Saturday following the March 15th corporation tax filing deadline. This Saturday morning breakfast provides a small reward for WNDE firm employees after a grueling deadline, and gives them an opportunity to visit with each other while enjoying a nice homemade treat. Hosted by WNDE tax partner Candy Huie, the firm’s break room is equipped with griddles, homemade pancake batter, and all of the fixings from syrup and powdered sugar, to fresh cut strawberries and whipped cream. The staff indulges in chocolate milk and orange juice, makes a variety of combinations of pancake toppings and compares their favorite flavors. What started out with 30 firm members has grown to over 100. The record for most pancakes eaten is 12!
According to Kate Phelps, tax manager, “the fact that one of our partners is making the pancakes says a lot about our firm. There is a big difference from having something catered versus having a partner taking time out of her busy schedule to cook from scratch for us. That extra effort goes a long way and the staff appreciates that effort.” You can smell the pancakes when you get out of the elevator and throughout the office. When the announcement is made at 8:30 a.m. that the pancakes are “hot off the griddle,” the line forms quickly. Candy commented, “My favorite part is listening to the happy conversations that fill the room with joy and laughter. It truly ‘charges our batteries’ for the next deadline.”
